Pedestrian InRoads: The freedom to walk and use our roads without fear or pain
Crash Maps and Statistics
Seattle Crashes and the Greenwood Map of Pain
The enormity of pedestrian crashes can barely be imagined. In Seattle from 2001 to 2006 more than 2500 pedestrians were hit by vehicles.* More than 400 incidents were fatal or disabling. That is about 75 people in one US city per year who lose their lives or face a disabling injury, such as a brain or spinal injury. This in the "safest" US city for pedestrians.
The data points on the map below represent individuals who were stopped and dropped in their tracks, bikes and pedestrians, in one Seattle neighborhood, 2001-2006. It could be your neighborhood.
The difference between life and death, or a lifetime of disability is mostly a matter of vehicle speed: 95% survival at 20mph versus 15% survival at 40mph.
